Rome is a city of ancient grandeur, but its more recent past is just as profound. This walking tour offers a powerful glimpse into the turbulent decades of Fascism, Nazi occupation, and eventual liberation, revealing how World War II shaped the Eternal City in ways that still linger today.
Your journey begins at Trajan’s Column before moving to nearby Piazza Venezia, the symbolic heart of Fascist Italy. Here, you’ll stand before the balcony from which Mussolini addressed thousands, and learn how his regime used Rome’s monuments as a stage for propaganda and power.
From there, walk along the edges of the Roman Forum, where Mussolini’s obsession with imperial grandeur left a permanent mark on the city’s landscape. Then step into the Jewish Ghetto, where the story turns more intimate and deeply moving as you learn about the community’s struggles and resilience during the occupation.
The tour continues through Piazza Navona to the banks of the Tiber River, where your guide will explore the Vatican’s role and the Church’s complex position during the war. Finally, you’ll relive the emotional moment of liberation in June 1944, when Allied forces entered Rome to scenes of hope, relief, and celebration.
This is not just a tour of landmarks—it’s a walk through memory, a deeper understanding of a city that endured, resisted, and survived.
