The town of Tivoli was, in the ancient world, a thriving city called Tibur, nestled in the heart of the Sabine Hills. Today, Tivoli remains relatively unexplored, yet it is home to some of the most beautiful sites in the region.

This tour begins at a location of your choosing within Rome’s city center, where you will meet your local, professional guide. From here, a Roman Vacations chauffeur will drive you to Tivoli.

On the way to Tivoli, after a short drive through the gorgeous Roman countryside, you will arrive at the sprawling estate of Emperor Hadrian. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is one of the largest Roman villa complexes in the world. Built in the second century CE, and designed by Hadrian himself, this villa complex stretches over 250 acres and comprises over 30 buildings, including dining rooms, temples, kitchens, and even a maritime theatre.

After your tranquil promenade among the ruins of Hadrian’s Villa, your private chauffeur will drive you to the historic Villa d’Este in Tivoli, a Renaissance masterpiece of landscape design and engineering. Once a Benedictine monastery, this estate was transformed into a luxurious palace complex in the 15th century. Here you will find a plethora of Greek and Roman statues, secret gardens, romantic passageways, and hauntingly beautiful water features. Indeed, this enormous complex boasts over 50 fountains, 200 basins, and over 60 waterfalls.

As the afternoon comes to an end, your chauffeur will return you to a location of your choosing within Rome’s city center.
