This tour begins at St. Peter’s Basilica (Basilica di San Pietro), where you will meet your expert, local guide. Once inside the basilica, your guide will discuss the artwork, sculptures, relics, and architectural designs that have graced this ancient, holy place for centuries. Here—and perhaps most importantly—you will find the shining, golden throne of St. Peter and the breathtaking altar under which his body is buried.
In a private vehicle, your journey will continue to the Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls (Basilica di San Paolo fuori le Mura), where the remains of St. Paul have been safeguarded for centuries. Here, you will have the opportunity to behold the very chains that bound St. Paul during his incarceration and subsequent house arrest.
From the Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls, it is a short drive to your next destination, the Basilica of St. John Lateran (Basilica di San Giovanni Laterano), or “The Cathedral of Rome”, where the skulls of St. Peter and St. Paul are vigilantly protected.
From the Basilica of St. John Lateran, your tour continues to the Basilica of St. Mary Major (Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore) perhaps the oldest church in Rome dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Here, your guide will discuss this basilica’s magnificent, ancient history. Here, too, you will have the opportunity to see splinters of sycamore taken from the manger in which baby Jesus once lay.
After a brief lunch, your journey will continue to the Basilica of St. Lawrence Outside the Walls (Basilica di San Lorenzo fuori le Mura), which houses the tomb of St. Lawrence and other significant relics; the Basilica of St. Sebastian Outside the Walls (Basilica di San Sebastiano fuori le Mura), which sits atop the ancient catacombs of Christian martyrs; and the Basilica of the Holy Cross in Jerusalem (Basilica di Santa Croce in Gerusalemme), which was built upon earth taken from Mount Calvary in Jerusalem and brought to Rome in the 4th century CE.
